"Many of you have felt the "bell-curve system" of grading was unfavorable for modules with small class sizes and competitive departments that admit only top 'A' Level students. However, Prof. Alan Chan, the Associate Provost of NUS, has assured us that this is not the case for modules with low enrolment (such as honors modules) are precluded from such a marking scheme. Instead, the grading of these modules is contingent upon the student's individual performance, not his/her performance vis-à-vis other students'.
Adopting the "bell-curve system" among lower-level modules also serves as a consistent grading guideline among all modules offered by the particular department. This helps alleviate problems of grade inflation or deflation in any particular module compared to the rest, especially since the diverse academic backgrounds of the examiners could possibly result in different marking criteria being adopted.
Prof. Chan also revealed that at present, a paper is being prepared to further explain to the students the grading system NUS adopts. "
